Access to consumers is also worth money, along the lines of another warm body. Because advertisers pay to show you advertisements on the Web, just as they do on radio or TV, this may help you to understand why visiting certain free Web sites produces a seemingly endless series of small windows designed to inform you, educate you, or perhaps just to catch your eye but ultimately, also designed to sell you something. Many Web sites generate the funding they need to keep operating by selling advertising to all comers, then inserting banners or separate advertising windows known as pop-ups or pop-up ads that they show to visitors who pass through their sites. You can see an example of this kind of thing in Figure 1-1. You may even notice that some Web sites bring strange invisible Web pages to your desktop. Figure 1-2 shows the toolbar icon for what s sometimes called a one-pixel Web page that is, a page frame so small you can t see it. Normally, such pages exist only as a way to bring other (unwanted) stuff to your desktop. Usually, they can t be restored, resized, or maximized by rightclicking their toolbar icons. If you try to move the window, you ll see your cursor dragging and dropping nothing visible!

An ideal validation would involve comparing predictions with detailed measurements for well-controlled tests on the plant that the user wishes to model. Unfortunately, it is very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve this for coal combustion. Controlled tests on actual utility furnaces are very expensive, the exact test conditions cannot always be determined, and only limited measurements can be made. More detailed measurements can be obtained on test rigs, but they still provide a challenging environment. The physical processes occurring in coal combustion are complex and not fully understood, and the sub-models used in most CFD codes have to simplify matters. These sub-models require values for coal-dependent properties that can be derived only from specialist laboratory-scale tests. Also, the predictions are often very sensitive to the detailed inlet conditions, but these are not always known in sufficient detail. As a result of these points, any validation has to make the best use of whatever data are available, and allow for shortcomings in the data and in the physical sub-models. From this viewpoint, the validation made by CD as code developer is acceptable; it gives the user confidence to try using the coal combustion capability while, at the same, showing its shortcomings (for example, in the prediction of carbon burnout). Innogy's validation, as code user, has been very successful as a way of gaining experience in using the Star-CD code to model coal combustion. Its first phase (modelling a drop tube furnace) has been successful and encouraging progress has been made with the second stage (the single burner furnace). All the validations have shown the advantages of collaborative projects, where suitable experimental data sets can be obtained and knowledge shared with other CFD modellers. They also show the need for further experimental data and for improved coal sub-models. In

following sections): 1. A prepartitioning unit Nature, which divides the domain into natural regions, suitable for expert algorithms. 2. A set of expert algorithms for blocking homogeneous and unre ned parts of a grid, which is implemented as one part of Fable. 3. A hybrid expert algorithm for partitioning complex and multilevel re ned portions of a grid, implemented as the other part of Fable. 4. An Organizer, which functions as the brain of, and interface to, Nature+Fable. With the components listed above, Nature+Fable is a hybrid and exible partitioner. Nature+Fable is the result of our research and the reasoning above. It is designed to cope with the scenarios known to cause problems for traditional techniques. The aim is that Nature+Fable will provide good scalability for realistic large-scale SAMR applications with deep and complex hierarchies. Moreover, the generality and con gurability of Nature+Fable make it suitable for applications in distributed computing, where resources are heterogeneous and even more dynamic than for regular parallel SAMR.
